Start with the layout, not the furniture. Good compact flat interior design on Kanakapura Road comes down to four decisions:
Do these four things before you choose a single finish and a compact flat on Kanakapura Road will feel organised rather than cramped.
This guide covers space planning room by room for a compact 2BHK or 1BHK, with real examples from our own apartment projects. If you want styling and colour tricks that make a small home feel bigger, we cover those separately in our guide to making the most of space in small homes. This guide is about the plan underneath.
Builder floor plans are a starting point, not a measurement. Walls, columns and window positions often differ by a few inches, and in a compact flat a few inches decide whether a wardrobe fits.
Before any design work:
This “movement map” shows you where storage is needed and where a clear path must stay open.
The most common mistake in compact flats is furniture that blocks the route from the entrance to the bedrooms or the balcony. Every time you step around a chair, the home feels smaller.
Keep one continuous path from the front door through the living area to the bedrooms and balcony, free of furniture and swinging doors. Then place furniture along the edges.
Where a hinged door eats into that path, consider sliding or pocket doors for the kitchen, utility or wardrobe.
| Room | Space-saving move | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance | Shoe cabinet with a bench seat on top | Storage and a place to sit, in one footprint |
| Living | One full-wall joinery unit for TV, storage and display | Replaces several loose pieces of furniture |
| Dining | Extendable or wall-mounted fold-down table | Full size for guests, compact every day |
| Kitchen | Full-height wall units and a tall pantry unit | Uses the wall to the ceiling instead of more floor |
| Bedrooms | Floor-to-ceiling sliding wardrobes; storage bed | No door swing; the bed becomes the biggest storage unit |
| Study | Desk built into a window bay or the end of a wardrobe | A workspace without a separate room |
| Balcony / utility | Tall utility cabinet, wall-mounted drying rack | Laundry and cleaning kit out of sight |

Instead of a TV stand, a bookshelf and a cabinet, build one continuous joinery wall that combines the TV unit, closed cabinets and a little open display. It reads as a single calm surface and holds far more than loose furniture.

Compact kitchens gain the most from height. Full-height wall units and one tall pantry or appliance unit can add more storage than an extra metre of counter.
A parallel layout often suits a long, narrow kitchen. Most 2BHK kitchens in Bangalore have roughly 10 to 14 running feet of counter, so every running foot needs a clear job.

Slate Haven is a 1,100 sq ft, 2BHK apartment we completed in Kengeri, in south-west Bangalore. The brief was to make better use of the existing layout through storage and visual continuity, without over-furnishing the home.
What we did:

Before designing storage, list what you actually own: clothes, shoes, kitchen equipment, suitcases, documents, festival decorations, cleaning kit. Then give each category a home:
| What | Where it should live |
|---|---|
| Daily clothes | Bedroom wardrobes, at reachable height |
| Suitcases, seasonal clothes | Top section of wardrobes or lofts |
| Shoes | Closed cabinet at the entrance |
| Bedding, extra pillows | Storage bed |
| Kitchen bulk items | Tall pantry unit |
| Cleaning kit, vacuum, ironing board | Tall utility cabinet near the balcony |
| Documents, chargers, daily clutter | Drawers in the living-room joinery wall |
Closed storage keeps a compact home calm. Open shelves look good in photos but collect dust and visual clutter. Use a few, not many.
Our apartment interior design checklist covers more room-by-room details, including bed, wardrobe and kitchen specifications.
Space planning itself does not have to be expensive. Most of the cost sits in the joinery: wardrobes, the kitchen and the living-room wall unit. Planning these well usually saves money, because you build fewer, better pieces instead of many small ones.

Many homes along Kanakapura Road are in newer apartment developments with builder-fixed layouts: set kitchen positions, plumbing points and balcony sizes. Working with those fixed points, instead of moving them, keeps costs and timelines under control. Use furniture and joinery to make the layout work for you.
Our studio is in Banashankari, close to Kanakapura Road, and many of our apartment projects are in the surrounding neighbourhoods. See how we work with homeowners in the area on our page for interior designers in Kanakapura.

Measure the flat yourself, mark door swings and fixed points, and keep one clear walking path through the home. Then plan storage on walls and up to the ceiling, and give each room a second use, such as a study nook in a bedroom.
A floor-to-ceiling sliding wardrobe. It needs no door swing space, and the top section stores suitcases and seasonal items.
Yes. In apartments under about 1,200 sq ft, a hydraulic storage bed is one of the most useful pieces of furniture, because it holds bedding and bulky items in space you would otherwise lose.
It depends on the room’s shape. A parallel layout works well in long, narrow kitchens, and an L-shape suits squarer rooms. In both, full-height wall units add the most storage.
Use them sparingly. Closed storage keeps a compact home calmer and cleaner. A few open shelves for display are enough.
Build a desk into a bedroom window bay, the end of a wardrobe run or a corner of the living room. Add a task light and a power point, and keep the desk shallow.
Buying furniture before planning the layout. A sofa or bed chosen first often blocks walking paths and decides the whole room, when the plan should come first.
